HUNDREDS of unregistered cars are being dumped in several streets in Bankstown, Punchbowl and Yagoona, causing a massive headache for the council who has to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to remove them each year.
The Canterbury Bankstown Council said they take away around 50 vehicles each month and had to tow away a staggering 638 last year, costing them between $180-1000 per vehicle. The cost depends on the size and urgency of the vehicle.
The fine for dumping vehicles is $550.
Canterbury Bankstown councillor George Zakhia is asking that the council and the state government take action against the illegal dumpers.
“This has been going on for years and those who dump the unmarked vehicles are getting away with it,” Cr Zahkia said.
“Several cars being dumped in streets in Bankstown, Punchbowl and Yagoona.
“We have to get the police and tow trucks to help us remove them, with council paying for this.”
A Bankstown Police Area Command officer said that if vehicles are abandoned, then they are not stolen, but dumped.
Cr Zahkia raised the issue at the council meeting last week, saying it is a big problem for the residents in those areas and also for the council.
He asked if the these illegal dumpers can be fined and punished because is costing the council a lot of money.
“We have to do something about these dumpers like fining and prosecuting them because (at the moment) they are getting away with it.
Residents, who think a can has been abandoned, can call council’s customer service centre on 9707 9000, lodge the matter online at cb.city/reportit, or email council@cbcity.nsw.gov.au.
