AN illegal immigrant has been caught green-handed after police allegedly discovered him holding almost a dozen cannabis plants at a hydroponic house in Sydney’s southwest.
Police allegedly discovered Dinh Cuong Nguyen at an Edensor Park home along with 246 cannabis plants worth $850,000 at 4pm on May 24.
The 26-year-old Cabramatta resident and Vietnamese national now faces several serious charges following the dramatic bust.
Nguyen has been charged with possessing an indictable quantity of prohibited plants, possessing prohibited drugs, being at a drug premises, and consuming electricity without authority.
Police allege Nguyen knowingly took part in the cultivation of 246 cannabis plants with an indoor hydroponic set-up.
Police also allege Nguyen, who was also found holding 11 plants and 89g of cannabis leaf, was involved in supplying the drug.
Nguyen did not appear at Fairfield Local Court on Thursday and did not apply for bail, which was formally refused.
Legal Aid has requested a Vietnamese interpreter for his next court appearance, scheduled for July 26.
The raid was conducted under Strike Force Zambesi, which targets hydroponic cannabis houses across Sydney’s southwest.
The Wetherill Park Region Enforcement Squad has seized hundreds of millions of dollars of cannabis from hydroponic houses since they established the strike force in 2011.
