A man has described the moment a high-speed police chase in Sydney’s southwest ended in bloody horror with two people hospitalised in a critical condition.

Canley Vale father Bun Heang Chiv was on his way home just after 7pm on Thursday, when he heard a car behind him accelerating hard.

“It hit my car - boom - and then he turned and hit the pole,” Mr Chiv said.

“I just stopped my car and then about five seconds later the police came over.”

About 7.20pm on Thursday, officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command attempted to stop an unregistered Ford Falcon travelling on McBurney Road, Cabramatta.

When the driver allegedly failed to stop, a pursuit was initiated.

The pursuit continued until it reached Railway Parade, Canley Vale, where the Ford crashed into a power pole opposite the Tien Hau Temple.

While Mr Chiv was unharmed, the driver of the Ford Falcon – a 33-year-old woman – and passenger – a 35-year-old man – were both treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Liverpool Hospital in critical conditions.

A crime scene was established with specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit attending to examine the scene.

About the same time, Martin Hoang - a senior instructor for the Sydney Yun Yee Tong Dragon & Lion Dance group - happened to drive by the incident just as the car smashed into the pole.

“I was on my way back from picking up one of my students to go dinner and we saw the highway patrols coming down Railway Parade and there was a car wrapped around the power pole,” Mr Hoang said.

“There were about 10 highway patrol cars, six ambulance and three fire trucks and they started to take the two people out of the car and onto a stretcher.

“They were able to take the female out quickly but the male passenger was stuck in the car for a while. There was a lot of blood,” Mr Hoang added.

“We saw blood on the clothes, the arms, the legs.”

“The male passenger would’ve been the most injured one as he was the one right next to the pole where (the car) was wrapped around.”

An investigative team from Campbelltown City Police Area Command has since launched a critical incident investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation will be subject of an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and oversight by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

More to come.
