Two charged over alleged armed robbery of Campsie train commuter

Two men allegedly followed a man from the Campsie train station before assaulting and robbing him at knifepoint.

Two men have been charged over the alleged armed robbery of a man who escaped while being taken to an ATM to withdraw more money at Campsie.

Campsie police said about 12am on July 21 two men had allegedly followed a 26-year-old man who had just left the train station and was walking on North Parade.

Police were able to identify one of the men after watching CCTV footage of the area.

“He was followed by two unknown men onto North Parade, where one of the men threatened him with a knife and demanded his wallet,” a police spokesman said.

“The two men, aged 22 and 18, allegedly searched the man and took his phone, keys and cigarettes.

“They allegedly assaulted the man before demanding that he take them to his car and an ATM to obtain more cash.

“The 26-year-old managed to escape and headed to Campsie police station to report the matter.”

The spokesman said they checked out CCTV vision of the area and identified the 18-year-old man, who was later charged by Bankstown detectives after allegedly committing a similar robbery.

The 22-year-old man was arrested at a unit in Belfield on Thursday morning, after police executed a search warrant.

The police spokesman said a number of items were seized and will be forensically examined.

Both men have been charged with robbery while armed with offensive weapon and detain person in company with intentions to obtain advantage.

Both were refused bail and appeared in Burwood Local Court on Thursday.
