Staffordshire bull terriers are the most popular dog breed in Canterbury Bankstown while purebreds and designer breeds are still top dogs in NSW.
Revesby mother of three Rebecca Sheen said she loved the breed as they were very likeable.
“I have a puppy, Vader, who is eight months old while my brother has another staffy, Tigs,” Ms Sheens said.
“These are great dogs to have but you need to take them to dog parks to socialise.
“They are fantastic with my children and Vader also gets along very well with my other dog, who is a cross bull mastiff and bull arab.”
Meanwhile, purebreds and designer breeds are still top dog in NSW.
But for every fashionable pup purchased, dozens are waiting for forever homes in shelters across the state.
Statistics from the Office of Local Government and the RSPCA reveal a contrasting picture for dogs in NSW, especially bull breeds disproportionately ending up on adoption row.
The 10 most popular registered breeds in NSW are cavoodles, followed by the Australian kelpie, staffordshire bull terrier, labrador retriever, border collie and american staffordshire terrier, jack russell terrier, german shepherd, greyhound and labradoodle cavoodles, a hybrid of a cavalier king charles spaniel and a poodle, are so in demand, buyers are paying from $4000 up to $10,000 at peak times like Christmas for a puppy.
“They’re just like little teddy bears. People take them everywhere,” Sydney Cavoodles’ Kelly Vella, who has a six-month waiting list for her puppies, said.
“They’re really smart, they don’t shed, I even have a few that have been trained to wake up the kids when the alarm goes off.”
Nowhere are cavoodles more popular in NSW than the Sutherland LGA, where residents registered 117 in 2018 and 213 the year before.
Among them were Alexandra and Mark O’Keefe, of Oyster Bay, who took home their $4000 eight-week old bundle of joy on June 5.
