A man charged with injuring two others during an alleged stabbing in Sydney’s southwest has wept in court after being granted bail.

Roy Cardillo, 46, appeared at Liverpool Local Court today charged with two counts of reckless wounding — domestic-violence related following the alleged incident on Monday.

Police allege the Miller man injured two men, aged 35 and 37, during an altercation on The Boulevarde in Punchbowl about 6.45pm.

The younger man sustained a minor wound to the thigh and the older man was injured in the buttock.

Paramedics were called to the scene and treated both men before taking them to Bankstown Hospital, where they are in a stable condition.

Police said their injuries were not life-threatening.

A crime scene was established and on Tuesday detectives arrested Mr Cardillo, who is known to the men, at a home in Miller.

He was taken to Liverpool Police Station before being transferred to Liverpool Hospital for treatment.

His Legal Aid solicitor applied for his release on bail, telling the court Mr Cardillo’s criminal record was “mainly driving-related offending” and his last offence was seven years ago.

The court heard Mr Cardillo was a carer for his wife, who has cancer.

Mr Cardillo’s solicitor submitted while the charges were serious allegations, there were conditions that could mitigate any concerns the court had, including an imposed curfew.

She told the court “this wasn’t a planned matter”.

Bail was opposed by the prosecution, who cited risks such as endangering the safety of the alleged victims and the possibility of committing further offences.

Magistrate David Degnan said the allegations before the court were serious and noted the area where the attack allegedly occurred was a “very populous area”.

Mr Degnan said the police facts indicated Mr Cardillo “wasn’t the instigator of the initial violence” and that “whilst he was sitting in the car, he was being punched through the window”.

However, he questioned why the defendant did not report it to police and allegedly took it “upon himself” to “walk back and ask the two males why he was attacked”.

“In any event, I think there’s much more to all of this than meets the eye at this point in time,” Mr Degnan said.

“It’s not apparent he was the instigator of the initial violence, although he was the instigator of the initial confrontation by stopping in the middle of the road and calling out to one of the victims.”

Mr Degnan said he was satisfied the unacceptable risks could be mitigated and granted Mr Cardillo bail, who began crying with his head in his hands.

Along with reporting to police, he is required not to leave his house in Miller unless in the company of his wife and not to enter the Canterbury-Bankstown LGA.

The matter was adjourned to tomorrow at Burwood Local Court.
