Quentin Bryce adds star power at Red Cross disaster relief fundraiser in Bankstown

Former Governor General of NSW Dame Quentin Bryce provides the star power at a major fundraiser for the Red Cross’ Disaster Relief Assistance & Recovery Fund in Bankstown.

Former Governor General of NSW Dame Quentin Bryce provides the star power at a major fundraiser for the Red Cross’ Disaster Relief Assistance & Recovery Fund in Bankstown.

Thousands of people have been impacted by the devastating drought and extreme weather conditions across Australia, making the fundraiser more important.

Dame Quentin Dame Quentin is a former Patron of the Australian Red Cross and will be joined by well-known author Sue Williams, at the fundraising launch at Bankstown’s Highline Venue, on Wednesday, at noon.

The fundraiser is hosted by St George District Red Cross branch, with all funds going to the towards Red Cross’ Disaster Relief Assistance & Recovery Fund helping communities across the country prepare, respond and recover from disasters.

This is a community fundraiser, one of many that community members host to raise funds for Red Cross.

Dame Quentin and Ms Williams, author of Women of the Outback, are themainspeakers at at the event, which includes performances from Ralph Scrivens, the champion bush poet and the Sing Australia Choir. There will also be an auction.

“Regional and rural Australia has been through a particularly difficult time with the drought, but as someone who grew up in regional Queensland, I’m always impressed by the incredible levels of resilience and resourcefulness in tough times,” Dame Quentin said.

“Organisations like Red Cross, with its network of volunteers right around the country, play a vital role supporting people at a time of crisis — providing hands on, practical and generous-hearted hard work.

“They are in for the long haul.”

Australia has seen record-smashing temperatures, fire conditions in Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales, cyclones in the NT and WA as well as severe flooding caused by unprecedented rain in north Queensland.

The drought continues to affect many parts of NSW, QLD, SA and VIC.

Red Cross Emergency Services Manager NSW Diana Bernardi said city people absolutely have country folk in mind.

“We are also seeing the numbers of people lending their assistance increase year on year, simply because disasters are on the rise,” she said.

“We’re extremely proud of our Red Cross volunteers who generously work around the clock at recovery centres, register people to help them find loved ones and provide one to one support with psychological first aid.

“When it comes to the drought, communities have shown enormous resilience.

“Thanks to the generosity of thousands of Australians who dug deep for our drought appeal, we were able to help families out in the country meet everyday living expenses, during a difficult time.
