Emergency services say an elderly man struck by a car while allegedly standing in the middle of a road at Belmore is lucky to be alive.
The incident occurred about 10.25pm on Wednesday, where the Punchbowl man, 78, was hit by a silver VW Golf along Burwood Rd.
The driver of the vehicle was a 38-year-old Lakemba man, according to Campsie Police Crime Manager Detective Chief Inspector Paul Albury.
“The man was allegedly standing in the middle of the road when he was struck by the car travelling south on Burwood Rd,” Det Chief Insp Albury told the Express.
“He is a very luck man to survive. He suffered head injuries and a broken leg and is being treated at St Georges Hospital.
“There is no suggestion the accident was the fault of the driver, was travelling around 45km per hour.
“Investigations are continuing and we are appealing to anyone who has information about this incident to contact us.”
The driver returned a negative test to the mandatory breath test, he said.
The man’s vehicle suffered damaged to the windscreen.
NSW Ambulance crews attended to the man after being alerted to the incident at 10.30pm.
“The elderly man suffered head injuries and was treated at the scene before being taken to St George Hospital in a stable condition,” a NSW Ambulance spokesman said.
