Two police officers allegedly suffered injuries while trying to arrest a teenage rider on an unregistered trail bike in Greenacre on Sunday, prompting the head of Bankstown police to ask the community to allow officers to do their job without interference.
Police said the senior constable had to be treated at Bankstown Hospital for his injuries allegedly sustained while trying to arrest the 17-year-old rider just after 8pm.
Another officer allegedly suffered minor injuries.
A large number of bystanders surrounded the Public Order and Riot Squad officers, who were then backed up by reinforcements from Bankstown and Campsie police, along with Polair and the dog squad.
“People need to be reminded that police should be allowed to do their job without interference,” said Bankstown commander Superintendent Michael O’Toole, adding they were checking on any CCTV footage of the alleged incident.
“People should realise that their actions in the heat of the moment could have a lifelong consequence if they find themselves charged.
“People should see that any threats or assaults on police, as from this job, will be treated appropriately.”
Officers from the Public Order and Riot Squad were patrolling Greenacre, when they saw an unregistered trail bike being ridden south on Waterloo Rd.
Police alleged the bike was not displaying rear number plates and pulled into a nearby service station.
“Officers stopped to speak to the rider and while attempting to arrest him, he has allegedly resisted their efforts before a violent struggle began,” a police spokesman said.
During the struggle, an officer drew his taser and the rider, a 17-year-old male, was arrested.
“A large number of bystanders surrounded officers and further police attended to assist dispersing the crowd.”
Two men, aged 21 and 22, were arrested for breach of the peace before being later released.
A third man, aged 20, was arrested and taken to Bankstown Police Station, along with the teenage rider.
The 17-year-old rider was charged with traffic offences including use unregistered motor vehicle, learner drive bike not display “L” plate, resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty, and two counts of assaulting police officer in execution of duty.
He was granted conditional bail to appear at a children’s court on Thursday, June 20.
The 20-year-old man was charged with resist officer in execution of duty, and use offensive language in/near public place/school.
He is expected to appear at Bankstown Local Court on Wednesday, June 12.
