Plans to revitalise the sprawling Bankstown Golf Course, which includes about 150 self-contained seniors dwellings and a new club house at Milperra have been revealed.
Bankstown Golf Club has lodged the initial paper work with the Department of Planning and Environment to build a large seniors housing complex, spanning four buildings.
Under the proposal, the 18-hole course will be retained and a new clubhouse will be built.
A swimming pool is also planned and will be open to the public.
Canterbury Bankstown Chamber of Commerce chief executive officer Wally Mehanna, gave his backing for the proposal.
“I absolutely support the proposal because the club has to think of other ways to generate income and keep their golf activities going,” Mr Mehanna told The Express.
“This is a good thing for the area and the club has definitely done its research on the need for seniors housing.
“You can be sure they will offer quality accommodation with the golf course adding to the attraction.”
David Renehan, the general manager of the Bankstown Golf Club, said he could not comment because the proposal had not been approved.
Bankstown Golf Club — which was established in 1928 — has submitted its plans through Hamptons Property Services for around 149 units to service the growing number of seniors in the area.
Three buildings, ranging from three to six storeys, are on the drawing cards on the eastern side of the 46.844 ha course.
According to the documents submitted by Hamptons to the government, there will be 92 two-bedroom units, 37 three-bedroom apartments and 16 one-bedroom units. These are only tentative and could be changed.
The proposals indicate there will be 16 units in the first building, 44 in the second, 33 in the third and 56 in the fourth. Basement parking will also be provided.
The club boasts a par 71, 6068m championship course and has a state-of-the-art teaching facility, the Evolution Golf Lab, and a successful junior program.
The plans comes on the heels of Mirvac’s plans to develop a section of the unused Riverlands Golf Club, also in Milperra. Mirvac plans to build around 350 residential dwellings, with work slated to start this year.
Mirvac will also build a residential complex at the current site of the Western Sydney University in Milperra, when the campus is moved to Bankstown in 2022.
