Milperra development: Mirvac plans 350 homes at Riverlands Golf Course

Property giant Mirvac has plans to build hundreds of homes on Riverlands Golf Course, along the proposed route of the Sydney Metro Southwest project, which is due to open in 2024.

Mirvac plans to expand its portfolio in southwest Sydney by building 350 residential dwellings on the old Riverlands Golf Course in Milperra.

Subject to approval, Mirvac hopes to start building the detached and semi-detached dwellings in 2020 with a completion date of 2025.

In October, the Australian property giant acquired 18 hectares of land at Riverlands which was rezoned for low-density residential use in October 2016.

A Canterbury Bankstown Council spokesman said a portion of the Riverlands site was rezoned R2 low-density residential by the NSW Government after it rejected the council’s position to retain the existing environmental zoning for the entire site.

The plans include a 3.5km cycleway along the riverfront, tennis courts, a pool and barbecue area.

This is Mirvac’s second major residential project in Milperra — it wants to build between 430-445 dwellings at the Western Sydney University campus.

Mirvac entered into an agreement with WSU to develop the campus once the university moves to its new site in Bankstown in 2022.

Both multimillion-dollar projects will seek to benefit from the controversial Sydney Metro Southwest rail link, due to start in 2024 and the direct access to the newly-duplicated M5 motorway.

Mirvac’s head of residential Stuart Perkins said the acquisition of the land reinforces the firm’s ability to identify and secure opportunities in the right location.

“Our vision is to unlock the riverside parklands along the Georges River where a new community can thrive and grow,” he said.

Bankstown Bushland Society, which has been opposing development at the old golf course since 1989, said the new project could mean the end of the wildlife and many native trees.

“We are worried the wildlife habitat and biodiversity values will be lost due to the development,” society spokesman Colin Gibson told The Express.

“We expect at least 60 per cent of more than 1300 trees will be lost due to the development, and some of these are more than 100 years old.

“We are also concerned that sheep and cattle are gazing on parts of the golf course because it affects the habitat and have written to the council about this.”

However, a Mirvac spokeswoman said it will retain many trees and will build houses among them.

SUSTAINABLE MASTERPLAN

“Mirvac is developing a sustainable masterplan which aims to retain a significant amount of existing trees, including healthy larger and mature trees,” she told The Express.

Mirvac is forging ahead with more southwest Sydney projects, including the Crest at Gledswood Hills and has lodged a DA for the redevelopment of the Benedict site in Moorebank.

They are also at the planning stages for a site in Menangle.
