Netball and tennis facilities to be upgraded in Canterbury Bankstown
Netball and tennis in Canterbury Bankstown are getting a big boost with more than $1.3 million committed by the federal government to improve facilities in Padstow and Panania.
NETBALL and tennis in Canterbury Bankstown are getting a big boost with more than $1.3 million committed by the federal government to improve facilities in Padstow and Panania.
A new netball facility will be constructed in Padstow replacing the grass courts and providing more opportunities for the growing number of players in the area.
Bankstown City Netball Association will receive $600,000 towards replacing the grass courts with hardground ones at Clarke Reserve in Padstow.
In addition, Canterbury-Bankstown Tennis Association has been awarded a federal grant of $360,000 under round three of the Federal Government’s Community Infrastructure Grants program.
Mr Coleman also confirmed the government has committed $400,000 for upgrades of AFL facilities at Kelso Park in Panania, if it is re-elected.
Current AFL facilities here are outdated and Bankstown Sports AFL Club intends on upgrading the park’s existing change rooms and having Sa new electronic scoreboard.
The funding comes ahead of the May 18 Federal Election with Labor also announcing a $350,000 funding boost to upgrade Deverall Park, in Bankstown.
Banks federal Liberal MP David Coleman, announcing the funding for Padstow, said there is a need for a new netball facility in the area.
“For too long local netball players and their families in the southern-Bankstown area have
had to travel out to Condell Park for training and competitions due to a lack of facilities in
our local area — this is not good enough,” Mr Coleman said.
“This funding will mean that players in southern Bankstown will have a quality facility in our local area.
“I am pleased we have been able to secure this funding, and want to thank everyone in the
local netball community for the time they put into volunteering in the sport.”
Association secretary Tara Banbury said they are excited to see these upgrades go ahead, and “to witness the positive impact they will have for local athletes and their families who will now have access to top notch facilities locally”.
MULTI-PURPOSE COURTS
Meanwhile, Canterbury-Bankstown Tennis Association said it will use the funding to construct two additional multi-purpose courts at their facility, located off Marco Ave, in Panania, to be completed by 2020.
These new courts will also be used for other sports, including futsal and hockey.
In addition to the new courts, existing facilities will also be upgraded with the construction of
new ramps and pathways, to improve the accessibility of the complex for all sportspeople.
Mr Coleman said “these are really important upgrades, which will enable more people in our community to play sports such as tennis”.

Canterbury-Bankstown Tennis Association president Roger Pitt, said the funding will make a difference and expand the operations to provide other sports such as table tennis and soccer to the community.
“We hope that this funding will help us reach out and engage with more members of the
community,” Mr Pitt said. “We look forward to starting work on this project.”
Senior vice-president of the association, Mr Paul Burgess hoped these upgrades will help more people get involved with sports.
