HUMANITY Matters is the new name for the Bankstown Multicultural Youth Service, three decades after it was launched from a small home in the city.
The organisation actively tries to makes a positive difference in the community by engaging with youth through its many initiatives.
Fittingly the name change was officially announced at its popular Peppertree Cafe, which helps disadvantaged young people gain employment readiness skills.
“From its humble beginnings running out of a small residential house at 9, Leonard St Bankstown, BMYS has become a pivotal player in supporting our local youth,” proud manager Mary Mala said.
“In the late 90s BMYS successfully lobbied to secure the first youth space within the CBD “Homebass” providing a safe place where young people could go to get help, advice and re-engage with the local community.
“With street youth work still at its core, the new Street Youth Services will be the organisation’s key service.
“Street work is the only way to effectively reach and engage vulnerable hard to reach young people.
“Under the umbrella of Humanity Matters, the Street Youth Services will be complimented by programs such as the Humanity United food truck, the FEED, Freedom Writers, Street Fests and The Cantina to create solid pathways for ensuring vulnerable youth.”
