A BMW driver allegedly speeding at more than twice the legal limit has been arrested after crashing his vehicle in spectacular style in Sydney’s southwest.
Officers from Bankstown Police Area Command stopped Najeh Elazzaz on Orchardleigh Street in Yennora at 2am on Wednesday, after the 27-year-old was allegedly witnessed driving dangerously by police.
Police will allege he sped off before officers could question him and police gave chase along Woodville Road in Georges Hall – allegedly reaching up to 160km/h in a 70km/h zone - before running a red light at the intersection of the Hume Highway and Henry Lawson Drive.
The pursuit was terminated shortly after due to safety concerns, with the BMW sedan later found on Henry Lawson Drive on its roof.
Police will allege Elazzaz abandoned his passenger and fled the scene before being located by the police dog unit in a nearby creek.
A consequent search of the BMW allegedly located methamphetamine, a bottle police believe to contain GBL – a drug most commonly used by bodybuilders to promote production of a growth hormone – and a cut-throat razor.
Elazzaz – from Old Guildford – was subsequently arrested and taken to Bankstown Police Station where he was charged with six offences including possession and supply of a prohibited drug, custody of an offensive implement in a public place, reckless driving, not stopping for police resulting in pursuit, and driving while disqualified.
His matter was heard in Bankstown Local Court where Elazzaz did not apply for bail and it was formally refused. He is due to appear in the same court on November 24.
The 29-year-old passenger was arrested and taken to Liverpool Hospital with wrist injuries, where they have since been discharged.
Inquiries continue.
