A husband and wife duo have been allegedly sprung with a hoard of stolen Medicare cards, fake prescription scripts and illegal drugs inside a motel room in Bass Hill.

Mehmet Celik, 34, and his wife Asli Cecen, 29, were arrested on Thursday following the discovery, with police alleging the items were to be used to illegally source prescription drugs.

Eleven prescription scripts for the drug Fentalyn, a powerful pain killer, and 20 blank prescriptions were seized, along with identification documents such as driver’s licences, photo IDs and Medicare cards not in the name of either Celik or Cecen.

The couple were taken to Bankstown Police Station where Celik was charged with eight offences, including obtain prohibited drugs by false representation, forge or alter medical prescription and custody of stolen goods.

He had been charged previously with using false prescriptions to source drugs, such as fentanyl, from chemists in Swansea, Casula, Riverwood, Caringbah and Cronulla.

No new charges were laid against his wife, however, she has a number of outstanding charges from 2018 where police say she illegally sourced prescription drugs. The Bass Hill woman is alleged to have skipped court on those charges.

The couple’s lawyer told the court they are both suffering substance addiction, with Celik currently waiting for a bed in a residential rehabilitation facility.

The 34-year-old’s bid to live at his parent’s Auburn home was flatly refused by the magistrate who said he simply couldn’t be trusted.

“I don’t think any chemist in Sydney would be safe from you and your behaviour, and on those circumstances bail is refused,” he said.

His wife Asli Cecen was granted bail, on conditions that she lives at her mother’s Northmead home and reporting to police daily. Her matters will be mentioned in Parramatta Local Court next month.

Celik will appear by videolink in Bankstown Local Court later this month.
