A serial shoplifter who allegedly stole $65,000 worth of luxury seafood has been sentenced after he raided a supermarket and stole more than $380 worth of meat because he “was hungry”.

Jeff Raharuhi, 33, appeared before Bankstown Local Court via audio visual link from Goulburn Correctional Centre and pleaded guilty to larceny after he stole 19 packets of prime cut meat from Woolworths at Campsie on April 18.

Documents tendered to court state Raharuhi entered the store with a friend and began to stash six packets of pork belly, five packets of pork ribs, one packet of beef eye fillet and seven packets of lamb cutlets worth $385.25 into a trolley.

Raharuhi’s friend attempted to stash $485.35 worth of meat and seafood before the pair attempted to flee the store before being stopped by a loss prevention officer and detained.

Magistrate Glenn Walsh said Raharuhi had a “horrendous history” and he stole the items because “he had no food and he was hungry”.

He was convicted and sentenced to a community corrections order for six months.

Raharuhi is also facing charges of robbery in company and larceny for an unrelated incident where he allegedly stole $65,000 worth of luxury seafood delicacies from the same business’ two Sydney stores.

Police allege Raharuhi robbed Fortune Abalone’s Haymarket store with three other men shortly before 4pm on May 14.

Raharuhi allegedly took Iceland Wild Deep Sea Thorny Sea Cucumbers, Supreme Kanto Japanese Thorny Sea Cucumbers, Adenophora Stricta and dried fish maw from the George St store, court documents said.

The thorny sea cucumbers sell for $1069 per 500g, the Japanese sea cucumbers cost $2475 per 500g and the dried fish maw costs upwards of $400.

A couple weeks prior, Raharuhi allegedly stole $15,146 worth of bird’s nest from Fortune Abalone’s Sussex St, Sydney store on April 26.

Edible bird nests are created by small swift birds using solidified saliva, which are harvested for human consumption and retail for about $200.

Raharuhi was refused bail and the case was adjourned to September 12 at Downing Centre Local Court. No pleas were entered.
