Canterbury Bankstown Council officials are cracking the whip on owners of illegally parked trucks in the city, netting in more 160 in targeted blitz operations.

Truck owners have forked out around $39,000 for 166 fines in just three months for illegally parking on footpaths, nature strips and no parking areas.

The fine for parking a heavy vehicle for more than one hour is $114, while parking on a footpath or nature strip in a built-up area incurs a $268 penalty.

In the most recent blitz conducted over the past three weekends, Villawood had the worst offenders parking illegally, with council officers issuing 31 fines.

The other suburbs targeted were: Greenacre (10 fines issued), Campsie (10), Punchbowl (9); Earlwood (7), Belmore (4), Lakemba (4) and Kingsgrove (4).

Mayor Khal Asfour said the crackdowns were due to complaints from residents and warned drivers and owners they will be targeted if they do the wrong thing.

“Truck owners are on notice, our officers could be anywhere, any time, and be supported by local police,” Cr Asfour said.

“We’ve issued 166 fines in three months and we will continue these operations until truck owners start parking where they should, and not cause disruption or safety problems for residents and motorists.”

Cr Asfour said trucks illegally parked on nature strips and footpaths, and in ‘no parking’ areas, caused safety issues for motorists and pedestrians.

The council initially targeted six suburbs, Earlwood, Campsie, Croydon Park, Lakemba, Punchbowl and Roselands.

Cr Asfour encouraged residents to continue to provide information, particularly through his and council’s Facebook pages, or online at cb.city/reportit.

“If you drive a heavy vehicle, you have a responsibility to park it safely and consider the impact on others,” Cr Asfour said.
