A strong academic culture and a focus on striving for excellence have driven students at a southwest Sydney school to consistently achieve some of the top NAPLAN results in the state.

Macarthur Anglican School is one of the top 10 best performing schools in the southwest for Year 9 results over a five-year period, according to an independent analysis of NAPLAN results between 2014 and 2018.

The Cobbitty school achieved a yearly average of 3075.4.

To find how each school performed in that period, their average scores for each year were combined and the yearly average found.

Special schools, schools with fewer than 20 students enrolled in either year, and schools that did not report any results for NAPLAN subjects in either year were excluded from the analysis.

The figures were independently compiled from the Federal Government’s MySchool website.

Macarthur Anglican School Dean of Studies for K-12 Kylie Elling said students were always encouraged to strive for excellence, with an emphasis on “doing something better than you did the day before”.

“We’re obviously proud of those results, but they do come with hard work and planning and it doesn’t come as a surprise to us. We do have a strong academic strong culture in the school,” she said.

She said staff modelled that attitude with “very high expectations for our students”.

“Ultimately it’s about achieving your potential.”

The school offers academic programs, including study evenings and mentoring, for students, which have been “really successful”, Ms Elling said.

One of the core principles the school focuses on is academic resilience, with students encouraged to take on feedback from teachers and strive to improve the quality of their work.

Ms Elling said while NAPLAN testing was not the “be-all and end-all”, the school uses data from the test as well as ongoing assessments to drive teaching and learning.

“We do look at NAPLAN seriously. We don’t teach to the test though. We have a very strong view on that because it’s actually about the students gaining the skills from the curriculum.”
