“I never drank or smoked and never went out with bad men — 100-year-old Joyce Worrad

Joyce Worrad was born towards the end of World War I and remembers the horrors and tough times during World War II.

JOYCE Worrad was born towards the end of World War I and remembers the horrors and tough times during World War II.

Now Ms Worrad, who was born and raised in Bankstown, has happier memories after celebrating her 100th birthday on Sunday (July 8) with her close family and friends.

“Yes I remember World War II and my husband served in the army,” Ms Worrad said.

“When man landed on the moon for the first time, we were in Perth where I was spending time with my daughter Rosemary.

“I remember having TV for the first time and I think we were among the first in the street to have television and a telephone.

“I never drove and could not ride a bicycle either.”

Rosemary and Robyn, her two daughters have given her much joy through their six grand children and seven great grandchildren, many of whom regularly visit the oldest relative at her Bupa Aged Care home in Bankstown.

“I love dancing and will get on the floor if I get the chance,” said Ms Worrad, who worked for many years as a barmaid to keep the family afloat.

“Mum worked very hard to bring us up, being a single parent and we have all turned out well,” daughter Rosemary said.

“She taught us good values, showing us what was right and wrong.

“She is also the oldest in the family as all but one of her siblings have passed away.”

Ms Worrad, who was born in Bass Hill, moved into the Bupa Aged Care home a few years ago, is the oldest resident in the home where there are many aged in the 90s.

“I feel very good and can’t believe I am turning 100,” a delighted Ms Worrad said.

Her secret to her healthy and long life is simple: “I never drank or smoked and never went out with bad men.”

Rosemary said her mother, who loves watching movies with the other residents, paints a bit and in the past enjoyed gardening.

“Mum is very happy when her grandchildren and great grandchildren visit her and also mingles a lot with the other residents,” she said.
