A once aspiring police officer caught with 30 bags of cocaine in Sydney’s eastern suburbs has been slammed for getting involved in “a scar on our community”.
Hyun Jin Kim, 25, from Potts Hill, was busted after police tapped on his car window while he was parked in a no stopping zone at Bondi Junction in December last year.
Police became suspicious and found 30 bags of coke and over $1500 in cash during a search of his vehicle.
The agreed facts stated Kim had been out selling the drug that evening before the bust.
Kim fronted Waverley Local Court earlier this month and narrowly avoided a jail sentence for supply prohibited drug and deal with proceeds of crime, which he pleaded guilty to.
Magistrate Ross Hudson slammed his harmful behaviour during the sentence.
“These offences are not unfamiliar and are prevalent in the eastern suburbs community,” he said.
“You are part of effectively what is a scar on our community – and what that scar is the supply of prohibited drugs.”
The court heard Kim was battling a cocaine addiction of his own when he turned to selling illegal drugs but he was now abstinent and had completed a drug program.
The court also heard Kim had studied a policing course for a short period at university but was unemployed and had taken a break from uni when the offences happened.
“Ironically that is exactly what you were looking at working against, studying policing at university,” Magistrate Hudson said.
Kim was sentenced to a community correction order with supervision for a period of 18 months, fined $1100 and was ordered to complete 120 hours of community service work.
The weight of the 30 bags of cocaine was 21.7g.
