What started as a simple pullover for allegedly driving without tail lights has resulted in police allegedly uncovering gun haul inside a vehicle in Yagoona overnight.

Officers from Bankstown Police Area Command attempted to stop a Volkswagen Golf on Cooper Street at 11.50pm on Wednesday, October 14, after it was allegedly witnessed driving without tail lights by police.

Police will allege the driver, 18-year-old Gunyon Lee, refused to stop which sparked a chase along the Hume Highway and nearby streets before stopping in Breasley Place, where police allegedly witnessed Lee and three others running from the vehicle towards Yagoona Railway Station.

Lee, of Belmore, was arrested a short time later with a duffel bag after a foot pursuit.

A search of the bag by police allegedly found a 12-gauge sawn-off shotgun, ammunition, a machete and a knife.

Lee was taken to Bankstown Police Station where he was charged with five offences including possessing a shortened firearm (not pistol) without authority, possessing an unauthorised firearm, possessing ammunition without holding a license, possessing or using a prohibited weapon without a permit, and custody of a knife in a public place.

The matter was heard in Bankstown Court this afternoon where a representative for Lee did not apply for bail, and it was formally refused.

His matter was adjourned and referred on to the DPP and will be heard again at the same court on November 5.
