Gregory Harris charged with accessing firm’s database, deleting evidence

A man has faced court accused of downloading and destroying hundreds of files which were going to be used as evidence in the Federal Court of Australia.

A contractor has been charged with illegally accessing the database of his former company and destroying more than 360 files after his computer had been subpoened by the Federal Court of Australia.

Gregory John Harris, 58, a former contractor of Sydney-based Generate Group, is alleged to have remotely accessed the firm’s server and downloaded documents.

A special task force allege Harris deleted more than 363 downloaded files after a court order was issued to access his computer.

The Peakhurst resident appeared at Bankstown Local Court on Monday in relation to the matter.

Generate Group, which has an office at Taren Point, develops its own software, and provides automated information systems that control all aspects of a business, according to its website.

In 2018, the State Crime Command’s Cybercrime Squad established Strike Force Dedal to investigate unauthorised access to the company’s server.

Strike force detectives allege Harris remotely accessed the server and downloaded documents.

He is charged with unauthorised function with intent serious offence, tamper with evidence with intent to mislead judicial tribunal, intending to pervert the course of justice and fabricate false evidence with intent to mislead a judicial tribunal.

According to police statements tendered to court, between May 10, 2016 and May 16, 2018, Harris gained unauthorised access and copied data restricted to Generate Group, from its computer server, knowing it was unauthorised with the intention to “dishonestly obtain a financial advantage/cause financial disadvantage to Generate Group”.

Between July 25 and July 28, 2018, Harris allegedly destroyed 363 files from his computer, taken from Generate Group’s systems, knowing it was or may be required as evidence in a judicial proceeding being the Federal Court of Australia.

He is charged with intent to mislead a judicial tribunal.

Harris is charged with deleting evidence from a computer — between 12am and 2pm on August 3 — which was subject to a subpoena intending to pervert the course of justice.

It is alleged Harris altered and changed data contained in a ‘team viewer’ log file, intending to pervert the course of justice between August 3, 2016 and August 3, 2018.

Harris has entered no plea and is on bail.

The case has been adjourned until Monday, March 2 at the Downing Centre Court.
