ENGINEERING student Winnalit Bhunthumwatchrarod, who usually enjoys light and healthy food, took out the Basement Brewhouse Burger Challenge, devouring the giant meal in three minutes 50 seconds.

Mr Winnalit, 20, closing his eyes at times, beat eight other rivals in the mouth-watering challenge of eating the Double Mighty Brewbeast at Bankstown Sports on Thursday night.

He swallowed, not chewed, the big meal and washed it down with a chocolate shake, with Chris Hingston from Eastwood finishing in a time of four minutes, 37 seconds while Penrith’s Yuan Yeap, who said he was unwell, took around five minutes.

“I had a light meal during the day and usually eat healthy because I take part in these competitions,” said Mr Winnalit, whose Instagram moniker is @winnachickendinna.

“My parents, who migrated from Thailand, ran a Thai restaurant, Thai On Wok in Glebe, for many years and as I a kid I used to eat a lot there.

“I eat light and healthy normally and my favourite is muesli.”

The specially-created Mighty Brewbeast came with four beef patties, four rashers of bacon, four slices of cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion on a brioche bun, served with fries and a shake.

Having only joined the Competitive Eating Australia ranks late last year, the win — worth $250 — seals Mr Winnalit’s growing reputation in this niche ‘sport’, where there are lucrative financial rewards for finishing food the fastest.

Mr Winnalit, who stands 184cm and weighs 76kg, said the shake was his biggest challenge.

“The toughest part was finishing the shake because it was rich,” said Mr Winnalit, whose first win was at Cabratta Diggers where he won the noodles challenge.

“I close my eyes and think of being in the moment, and I mostly swallow the food, not chew it.

“It is like a sport to me and I love these food challenges.”

With this heavy meal tucked under his belt, Mr Winnalit is looking ahead to beating top rivals in the 8Bit competition at Darling Harbour where whoever eats the most burgers in 10 minutes, is the champion.

Mr Hingstown also has his own Instagram tag: @fit_in_food while Mr Yeaps is @yuan.and.only.
A truck driver by profession, Mr Yeap said he fasts most days and enjoys healthy food.

He said he was not well for the burger challenge, having had a virus for the past few days.

Jesse Freeman — also known as foodcoma_eats — was the MC for the event.

All entrants who finished their meals within the 30-minute time limit were rewarded with a drink voucher and a Brewhouse bottle opener.
