A rapidly expanding charcoal chicken cult favourite has lodged plans to transform a former Red Rooster restaurant at Roseland into a drive-through El Jannah.

The first El Jannah store opened in 1998 in Granville by founders Andre and Carole Estephan and the franchise has now expanded to more than 20 stores across NSW, ACT and Victoria.

Since then, stores across Australia have sold more than 50,000 chickens per week and have franchise opportunities that would cost eager investors between $1m and $1.7m.

Plans for Sydney’s 15th restaurant have been lodged with Canterbury-Bankstown Council for 938–944 Canterbury Rd, Roselands.

If approved, the restaurant would have takeaway services and dine-in for 40 patrons.

The restaurant is proposed to operate seven days a week, from 6am to 11pm with eight staff on site.

The planned refurbishment would include changes to the shop front and include five new business signs.

The proposed 305sq m development would also involve a new internal fit out for the dining area and kitchen.

Documents state the development would enhance the quality of the suburb and “include opportunities to activate the city centre with late night trading and indoor dining”.

El Jannah made its foray into Victoria last year with a restaurant opening at Preston, with another three franchises expected to open in Melbourne later this year.
