Is this Sydney’s worst road? Earlwood residents certainly think so.
The Waterside Crescent community are fed up with the state of their road, which they say hasn’t had any major work done to it since before 1999.
After a 2014 petition to get the road upgraded fell on deaf ears, the residents launched a second appeal in December.
Last week they were told by the council that a “major program of improvements” was underway in the street and kerb and guttering and road resurfacing will begin after drainage work is completed in June.
“In the meantime, any temporary repairs will be carried out, as required, and the road surface condition monitored,” Canterbury-Bankstown Council spokesman said.
It’s news residents like Judy Playfair, who has lived in Waterside Cr since 1999, are taking with a grain of salt.
“As a resident in the street I have seen no evidence of any major improvements in Waterside Crescent,” Ms Playfair said.
“We have had the situation of in the meantime now for several years. The council have filled some of the potholes but it just makes it worse, it needs to be resurfaced.”
Canterbury state Liberal MP Sophie Cotsis has been campaigning for an upgrade to the road since December.
She says it is in an “appalling state” and needs upgrading now.
“There are residents whose cars have been damaged from loose gravel being flicked up,” Ms Cotsis said.
“It is disappointing for the residents who pay their rates to have to run a campaign for their road to be upgraded ... we need the council to prioritise this upgrade for now, not sometime in the future.”
