A mother and daughter who allegedly attacked a woman in a supermarket aisle over toilet paper will defend the charges in court.
Treiza Bebawy, 60, and Meriam Bebawy, 23, were not required to appear at Bankstown Local Court today, where pleas of not guilty were entered for the pair, who were charged with affray over the incident on March 7.
Police were called to a Woolworths supermarket in Chullora after staff intervened in the alleged brawl.
Footage of the incident, which went viral globally after being posted online, shows the Bebawys guarding a trolley full of packs of toilet rolls.
A woman is heard saying, “I just want one packet” while another responds, “no, not one packet!”
At one point, a Woolworths employee can be heard saying, “look what you’re doing, you are fighting over tissues – think about what you’re doing, yeah?”
The alleged incident took place amid mass buying due to the coronavirus, which left toilet paper shelves bare across many supermarkets.
Police allege the pair from Bankstown attacked Tracey Hinckson, 49, who escaped uninjured.
According to court documents, the women allegedly used or threatened unlawful violence towards the female victim and would have caused people at the scene to fear for their safety.
The women have both pleaded not guilty to affray.
The matter will return to Bankstown Local Court next month.
