More than a dozen eateries, grocers and bakeries in Canterbury-Bankstown have been slapped with fines since the start of the year for violating food safety regulations, latest records show.

The NSW Food Authority’s name and shame list, updated last Tuesday, has exposed the dodgy practices of 14 venues across the city, with the local council handing out fines ranging from $440 to $1320 for breaches of cleanliness standards, having pests inside their eateries and food storage violations, committed since January 2020.

Lakemba restaurant Bawarchi was one of the worst offenders, receiving a $1320 fine for food handling breaches, $880 for failing to ensure hand washing facilities were only used to wash hands, arms and face, and another $880 for failing to maintain the food premises to the required standard of cleanliness in February.

A Canterbury-Bankstown Council spokeswoman said the council had continued to conduct compliance inspections during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some 423 inspections had been carried out since March — the height of the pandemic — not including reinspections.

“We are continuing to undertake routine inspections of food premises and taking appropriate action on non-compliant operators to ensure food safety is maintained,” the spokeswoman said.

“COVID-19 compliance inspections are also being undertaken to ensure current public health orders are followed.”

She said it was a “challenging time for restaurants and cafes” and the council was providing support through online training to educate non-compliant and new food businesses about food safety.
