Canterbury baby first in NSW to have electronic medical record

Newborns are always unique but Charlene Nguyen is extra special. She is the first baby in NSW to have a fully integrated electronic medical record.

Charlene Nguyen, who was born at Canterbury Hospital, is officially the first baby in NSW to get a fully integrated electronic medical record (eMR).

Mum Natalie Trang, who has two older children, gave birth to Charlene at 11.39am on Tuesday, October 1 at Canterbury Hospital.

This program enables clinicians to document a woman’s pregnancy through the district’s electronic medical record. It also generates a digital health record for babies born at Canterbury Hospitals and Royal Prince Alfred.

Sydney Local Health District is the first in the state to introduce PowerChart Maternity in all maternity wards and antenatal clinics.

SLHD chief executive Dr Teresa Anderson said the new system will equip clinicians with the information they need to provide the very best care to patients.

“I’m proud to say we are the first Local Health District in NSW to introduce PowerChart Maternity into our electronic medical record,” Dr Anderson said.

“The system will improve our care of women by streamlining communications between doctors, midwives and health professionals as they will all see the same information.”

CANTERBURY HOSPITAL'S 90TH BIRTHDAY

Aaron Jones, Chief Nursing Information Officer at Sydney Local Health District, said the system enables staff to observe and monitor a woman’s progress from inside and outside the hospital.

“The obstetrician can log into the secure system and view observations in real-time,” he said. “Midwives who visit mums and new babies at home don’t have to come into the hospital first to collect piles of paper files.

“They can view the records on their mobile devices, not having to transport the files will give them more time to see women in their homes.”

WHAT IS POWERCHART MATERNITY

It is a digital health record helping clinicians to document a woman’s pregnancy in Sydney Local Health District’s electronic medical record (eMR). Sydney Local Health District and South Western Sydney Local Health District share their eMR.

The eMR is connected with HealtheNet, a program linking public health systems across NSW.
