Campsie man charged after 800kg of tobacco products found after fire

A whopping 800kg of illegally imported tobacco – worth an estimated $3 million – has been uncovered after a house fire in Sydney’s southwest. A man has been charged.

A 31-year-old man has been charged after 800kg of tobacco products, worth an estimated $3m, were discovered following a house fire in Sydney’s southwest.

The man was arrested after emergency services were called to a home on Byron St, Campsie following reports of a fire on Thursday about 12.30pm.

Officers from Campsie Police Area Command seized 800kg of tobacco products from the property worth an estimated street value of $3m after firefighters extinguished the blaze inside the home.

The man was taken to Campsie police station and charged with importing tobacco products reckless to defrauding of revenue.

Police will allege in court the man had been selling tobacco which had been illegally imported into Australia.

The man was granted bail to appear at Bankstown Local Court on May 23.
