STACEY St has the dubious honour of being the seventh slowest road in Australia and New Zealand and the slowest road outside the Sydney CBD.
Stacey St’s unflattering reviews has been confirmed by Ausroad and gives extra importance as Roads and Maritime Services start preliminary work for the proposed upgrade of this vital transport artery, which taxes the patience of motorists.
Traffic conditions changed along Stacey St and Fairford Rd at Bankstown recently for investigation work.
The NSW Government said it is funding this work as part of its $300 million Gateway to the South Pinch Point and Noise Abatement programs.
However, Blaxland state Labor MP Jason Clare said the government should make it three lanes due to the congestion.
He said Stacey St needs three lanes in both directions from Bankstown Central shopping centre all the way to the Hume Highway.
“Sometimes it can take 40 minutes just to travel 5km,” he said.
“Stacey St is a major bottleneck, especially the intersection of Stacey St and the Hume Highway.
“What’s needed here is an overpass or interchange to get traffic flowing.
“I’m calling on the state government to finish the job and fix this problem once and for all.” Work will be carried out on Fairford Rd between Stacey St and Macauley Ave to locate underground utilities and establish ground conditions to help develop a design for a new noise wall.
Work on Fairford Rd will be carried out across 12 shifts until September 11, with work on Stacey St schedule to finish on July 13.
