Bankstown Private Hospital plans given green light by Canterbury-Bankstown Council

A bold $112 million proposal for a private hospital in Bankstown would provide much-needed health services and an extra 195 beds for the region.

The Government will hand down a decision on a proposal to build a ‘much-needed’ new $112 million private hospital in Revesby.

The plans, which have been tweaked since their tabling in 2017, have recently been “adopted” by Canterbury-Bankstown Council and are now waiting to be signed off by the Department of Planning.

In the latest proposal for the Canterbury Rd site, the hospital has been reduced from seven storeys to five storeys, and as a result, 250 beds have been condensed to 195 beds.

Construction costs are estimated at $112.9 million, and the development will generate upwards of 500 jobs over a construction period of just under three years, according to the plans.

The hospital, which would sit near the Bankstown-Lidcombe public hospital, would be “state-of-the-art”, according to the site’s developer, and include 11 operating theatres, pathology, radiology, and 430 parking spaces.

And developer Steven Spiridonidis, of SGC Assets, said he was certain the proposal would be approved by the State Government, and construction should begin at the end of 2021 or early 2022.

Mr Spiridonidis said a private hospital was desperately needed in the area.

“We need a private hospital in Bankstown. There is no major private hospital in the area and we need the beds,” he said.

He said there would also be much-needed cardiology and children’s services at the hospital.

“At the moment, if anything happens to children in the Bankstown area, parents have to go elsewhere,” Mr Spiridonidis said.

The plans cite “a growing need for additional hospital facilities, particularly private hospitals within the area … due to the current lack of such services within the Canterbury Bankstown LGA”.

According to the plans, the hospital will share services with the public hospital such has medical imaging services, benefiting both hospitals.

Last year, the NSW Government also committed $1.3 billion to building a state-of-the-art Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital on a new site, with construction to start in March 2023.

The site for the Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital has not yet been named.

It is not clear when the Department of Planning will make their final decision on the proposal.
