Bankstown Central, one of the largest shopping centres in southwest Sydney, plans to develop a further 300,000sq m over several stages.

Owners Vicinity Centres, which runs shopping centres around Australia, plans to lodge a development application incorporating retail and mixed-use opportunities early next year.

A spokeswoman for Vicinity said at the first stage, they will focus on “ensuring the retail offer in the centre continues to evolve in line with what our customers want”.

“This development application contemplates the long-term future of Bankstown in the context of the significant growth forecast for western Sydney,” a spokeswoman for Vicinity told The Express.

“This includes the future development of approximately 300,000sq m of additional area at Bankstown Central.

“The proposed masterplan will be delivered over many stages, having a 10-year plus time horizon.”

Bankstown Central, which opened in 1966, recently upgraded its food court.

The three-level Bankstown Central currently has more than 280 retailers, including Myer, Big W, Kmart, Target, Woolworths and Supa IGA.

Vicinity Centres boasts annual retail sales of $17.4 billion.
