A man has been charged with attempted murder in relation to a prison guard’s alleged attempt to kill her husband by blowing up his car in 2015.
Sharon Yarnton, 50, is accused of spiking her husband Dean Yarnton’s beer before he woke in his Nissan Navara at a Picnic Point park with a gas cylinder in the back seat and diesel fuel poured around the car on February 1, 2015.
Ms Yarnton pleaded not guilty at court in May 2017.
Bankstown police officers yesterday charged Caringbah man Anthony Mouhtaris, 23, with attempted murder and throwing or laying down an explosive with intent to cause bodily harm.
He was formally refused bail at Sutherland Court today and will reappear before the magistrate tomorrow.
Two others accused of trying to help kill Mr Yarnton, Fady Houda, 24 and his wife Monique Hayes, 25, have also pleaded not guilty to attempted murder.
All three accused remain before the courts after their trial was vacated last month as Ms Hayes, who is heavily pregnant, is due to give birth this month.
Ms Yarnton and Ms Hayes are on bail, while Mr Houda remains behind bars.
In May 2017 crown prosecutor Guy Newton told the jury there was “tension” and “great animosity” between Mr Yarnton and Ms Yarnton due to Mr Yarnton’s alleged affair with a work colleague.
The court heard the pair planned to divorce and had sold their family home in Menai, in the Sutherland Shire.
Mr Newton said Mr and Ms Yarnton went to dinner at a Merrylands club with their friends Christine and Craig Osland before Mr Yarnton allegedly said the beer “tasted unusual” and “he felt like there were granules on the lip of the glass”.
“Mr Yarnton says that he then drank some of that beer and afterwards started to feel extremely tired,” Mr Newton said.
The Crown alleges Ms Yarnton put a substance in the drink to make him drowsy before she recruited her son’s friend, Ms Hayes, to kill her husband.
“Mr Yarnton woke up to a hissing sound and found himself alone,” Mr Newton said.
“He says that he looked over the back seat and he saw the gas cylinder … he then turned it off got out and felt his socks were wet and petrol was soaking his feet.”
Ms Yarnton was arrested at the scene and charged with the attempted murder.
The Crown alleges Ms Yarnton offered Ms Hayes and Mr Houda $20,000 to carry out the murder and a glove found near the car allegedly contained DNA consistent with Mr Houda.
