The best advice for first-time parents that’s actually helpful

Kidspot’s parenting producer Jenna Martin shares some tips for new mums and dads about the realities of having a baby.

Becoming a parent for the first time can be an overwhelming experience.

Having a baby can be overwhelming. From feeding to sleeping and everything in between, there are no hard and fast rules — even if everyone has an opinion.

But if you’re about to enter the newborn trenches, here is some advice that might actually help.

All babies are different

Your baby won’t be the same as your sister’s, just as you and your sister aren’t the same. Try not to compare: all people are different. Babies are simply little people.

You might not bond with your baby at first

Plenty don’t, and if that’s you, that’s OK. It doesn’t mean you love them any less.

But while normal, if you think your feelings go deeper than that, it’s worth speaking up to your partner or a friend or GP. Post-natal depression is very common and it is nothing to be ashamed of.

Bonding with your baby is something that may not happen right away.

You don’t need to buy everything right away

Like a cot, or a pram, for instance. Plenty of mums admit their cots and prams went unused the first few months, preferring bassinets and wraps until their babies got a bit older.

You can also save money by hiring newborn things like a capsule, a breast pump or even a bassinet. They’re expensive purchases for things you might only use for a few months.

Most importantly, ignore unwanted advice

This is your baby and your family. Listen to people you trust and listen to doctors who have your best medical interests at heart.

But generally, you should take every piece of advice with a grain of salt and remember point one: every baby — and parent — is different. Do what’s right for you.
