Home organisation has become so important to the health of the home and psyche that an entire industry has emerged – including worldwide best-selling reference books, and professional home organisers and de-cluttering experts.

Marie Kondo anyone?

The phenomenon of decluttering has taken off and for good reason.

By removing unnecessary items from your home, it will run more efficiently, be easier to clean and will allow you the breathing space you need to clear your head at the end of each day.

If you shudder at the thought of those unsightly plastic storage containers from hardware stores, don’t fear.

There are elegant and simple ways to store your clutter.

WICKER BASKETS

These can be placed on shelving, tabletops, the floor, or beneath a console table.

Oversized baskets by the door are perfect for shoes. Similarly, a large basket by a fireplace is perfect for firewood, while a basket in the lounge room can house magazines or other reading material in a stylish way.

ADD A TABLE SKIRT

Drape fabric over a round pedestal table for a stylish statement that will create a space to conceal unwanted clutter underneath.

Buy one ready made, or go the extra mile with designer details and have the fabric custom tailored with fringing along the bottom edge.

USE CORNERS

Add specialised storage in an unused corner space – corner cabinets are readily available and also provide an extra surface for a decorative display in an otherwise wasted space.

HANGING SPACE

Kitchens are often over-cluttered with crockery, cutlery and various mod-cons such as electrical appliances.

Use overhead space by hanging pots and pans on hooks over your stove, saving valuable cupboard space for the less charming kitchen items.

Hanging pots and pans and kitchen utensils make for a streamlined household.
