Two shot in Engadine in Sydney’s south

AN 81-year-old man shot his estranged partner’s son outside a house where she and two teenagers were, before pointing a gun at police and then fatally shooting himself in the neck in a standoff in Engadine this morning, police have said.

AN 81-year-old man shot his estranged partner’s son outside a house where she and two teenagers were, before pointing a gun at police and then fatally shooting himself in the neck in a standoff in Engadine this morning, police have said.

Acting Assistance Commissioner Superintendent Karen McCarthy from the Central Metropolitan Region told the media conference it was a “tragic event”.

She said about 7am police camr across the man with a gun as they approached Ridge Rd in response to a report of shots fired.

“The male inside the vehicle pointed the firearm at responding police,” Supt McCarthy said.

“It then discharged and unfortunately he suffered a self-inflicted injury.”

Supt McCarthy said paramedics treated the man at the scene but died of his injuries.

Neither the man., his victim nor the teenage children or adult female at the home during the shooting are known to police.

“Two teenage children and adult female were also at the home, but none of them were injured,” Supt McCarthy said.

Supt McCarthy said another man, 56, was treated by paramedics for a shotgun wound to his forehead.

“Given the circumstances a critical investigation was declared and it is now being investigated and monitored,” she said.

“The victim is the son of the deceased male’s current estranged partner.

“He is in a stable condition and does not have significant injuries.”

She said the guns were registered and the dead man was a licenced gun owner.

“It is White Ribbon Day and it is a reminder of the violence still in our community and how we need to remain vigilant and address this problem,” she said.

The elderly man did not live at the house prior to this morning’s shocking incident.

A critical incident team from the Eastern Beaches Area Command will independently investigate the shooting, which will also be subject to a coronial investigation.

A local man said residents had thought it was a high speed chase or a car crash when police descended this morning.

“We heard a loud bang but we didn’t know if it was a car or a gun,” he said.

“Around here we don’t know what a gun sounds like, it’s not Merrylands.”
