A young woman who drunkenly bashed a complete stranger at a Sydney hotel last year has narrowly avoided jail after a string of drug and domestic violence offences which breached her bond.

Tannah Knight-Olsen bragged to friends “I’m free” after Sutherland Court magistrate Glenn Walsh sentenced her to 12 months’ imprisonment to be served in the community.

The 19-year-old Barden Ridge woman first appeared in court charged with common assault in September 2017 after an unprovoked attack on another woman at Miranda Hotel.

“As the accused walked through the sports bar, she swung her right hand in a fist and hit the victim in the back of the head,” the police facts read.

“The victim felt pain to the back of her head where the accused hit her and was shocked by what had occurred.”

Knight-Olsen subsequently breached her bond when she was charged with possessing cannabis and ice four times in two months.

She also pleaded guilty to two counts of destroying property after smashing a landline phone, a vase and a pot plant during separate arguments with a family member on June 6 and on July 28.

Mr Walsh told Knight-Olsen ”if you lay down with dogs, you get up with fleas”.

“Whilst I understand that you’re looking for something in life that eases your pain, (the drug use) makes you a worse person,” Mr Walsh said.

“That’s why you get angry and that’s why you have problems with police and your family – you need to break that cycle.”

Knight-Olsen is forbidden from taking drugs as part of her intensive corrections order.

On May 4 police found Knight-Olsen with a gram of cannabis hidden in two make-up bags when they searched a vehicle she was in at a Sylvania carpark.

Just five days later police found 1.4g of cannabis in Knight-Olsen’s handbag after a vehicle stop at 1.30am in Caringbah.

On May 30 police had also charged Knight-Olsen with possessing 0.37g of the drug ice, before she was caught with 0.19g of ice while driving in Sutherland on July 24.

Knight-Olsen was charged with four separate counts of prohibited drug possession.

“She has to change her life,” Mr Walsh said.

“She needs assistance and she needs that in the community - she’d just be a victim in jail.”
