Sydney teenager charged after flipping car in alleged drag race

A teenager was allegedly travelling at almost double the speed limit during a drag race in a suburban street when his car flipped, leaving his friend critically injured.

A teenager was allegedly travelling at almost double the speed limit during a drag race in a suburban street when his car flipped, leaving his friend critically injured.

Ishayat Hayat, 18, has been charged with organising a drag race, exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h in a 50km/z and dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm after he allegedly raced off another driver in Connells Point on January 2.

Court documents allege Hayat was driving a silver Toyota Corolla at high speed on Connells Point Rd at 1.35pm when the car flipped, leaving his front seat passenger critically injured.

Hayat was supported by his family when he appeared before the registrar at Sutherland Local Court.

The Kogarah man’s licence was suspended and he will enter a plea in relation to the five charges when he returns to court on March 12.

A man driving a Mercedes who was allegedly involved in the race was also charged after police attended his home and seized his car on January 7.

The 18-year old man from Cessnock is to face Sutherland Local Court on January 31.

His licence was also suspended.
