The death of a cherished husband, father and schoolteacher in a horrifying two-car crash in Sydney’s south has left a community completely devastated.
Father of four Pete Hazlewood, 40, loved God, his wife Emily, his children Kiara, Elijah, Elliana and Malachi, his students and his friends.
He tragically died after his Mazda 2 collided with an Audi Q3 on Heathcote Rd in Heathcote at 11pm on October 13.
The Engadine man was a beloved teacher and pastoral care co-ordinator at Wollondilly Anglican College in Sydney’s southwest, and previously worked at Thomas Hassall Anglican College in Middleton Grange.
The college’s headmaster Stuart Quarmby wrote a tribute to Mr Hazlewood on their school’s blog from Germany.
“Peter was many things to many people – a colleague, teacher, friend, mentor, husband, father, brother, son, a father figure and a successful coach of the staff Oztag team,” Dr Quarmby wrote.
“Please pray for Peter’s family that they will find some comfort and strength.”
Dr Quarmby said the school community was deeply affected by Mr Hazlewood’s death.
“Peter had a larger than life personality and he lived his life with a passion which reflected his joy of living,” Dr Quarmby wrote.
“Through his prayerfulness, warmth, humour, wisdom, integrity and care of others Peter had a deep and lasting influence on the lives of the students, staff and many parents at the college.”
Dr Quarmby also recalled an article Mr Hazlewood wrote on suffering as people of Christian faith.
“Jesus’ example is perhaps the ultimate demonstration that persevering through suffering does, in fact, lead to hope,” Mr Hazlewood wrote.

“Students, parents, friends, family and staff, no matter what you have faced or may still be coming to grips with now, my encouragement to you all is that through your struggles and the challenges, God is at work in you.”
A spokesman for Anytime Fitness Engadine posted a heartfelt tribute to the enthusiastic gym-goer on Facebook.
“Peter Hazlewood was one of the friendliest and most genuine blokes you would have ever had the privilege of knowing,” they wrote.
“Pete simply just loved people and found such joy in sharing his love and pride for his kids and his excitement and pride for Emily thriving here in the gym too.
“Pete was always smiling and was an enormous source of energy around the club – you always felt him here, he just had that incredible vitality.”
The Sutherland Shire community and Mr Hazlewood’s former schools have rallied around his bereft family, raising almost $10,000 in less than 12 hours on a GoFundMe to support them.
His life will be honoured at a service this week.
