A HIGH school tutor will remain behind bars after he was charged with indecently assaulting a young female pupil on several occasions earlier this year.

Mizanur Rahman, 43, appeared via audiovisual link at Sutherland Local Court on September 14 after the Child Abuse Squad based in St George charged him with five counts of indecent assault against his 14-year-old student.

Police allege he indecently assaulted the girl five times between January 30 and September 6 while tutoring her at her Sydney home.

His solicitor applied for bail on the basis of Rahman’s prior good record but the prosecutor told Magistrate Peter Stewart Rahman posed an unacceptable risk to the community.

“He was entrusted by the victim’s family to provide a service in the safety of their family home,” the prosecutor said.

“The alleged victim is a 14-year-old girl - because of his employment as a tutor and her age that the prosecution will deem this an aggravated situation.

Rahman was refused bail and his case was adjourned to September 28.

His lawyer told the court Rahman would strongly defend the charges.

“My client has been residing in Australia (after moving from Bangladesh) for 10 years and has no prior matters,” he said.

“He was a teacher in Dhaka and since he has been in Australia he has been a maths tutor.”

An online listing for Rahman indicates he has previously advertised his services as a calculus, computing, maths, physics and statistics teacher and tutor.
