A midwife at one of Sydney’s largest public hospitals has been diagnosed with coronavirus, sparking an urgent mission to track down and notify new parents who may have come into contact with her in recent days.

A South Eastern Sydney Local Health District confirmed the midwife, who works at St George Hospital, tested positive for COVID-19.

South Eastern Sydney Local Health District can confirm that a midwife at St George Hospital “All patients that were in close contact with the midwife have been informed,” the spokeswoman said.

“The midwife is now in isolation and there is no ongoing risk to patients at St George Hospital.”

The COVID-19 virus poses a low risk to newborn babies, though a two-month-old baby boy became the youngest NSW resident to contract coronavirus overnight.

More to come.
