Shute Shield 2020: Southern Districts’ Liam Moseley happy in rugby after junior stints at Broncos, Reds, Lions

Liam Moseley was so good at sport as a teenager he was a member of elite AFL, rugby league and rugby union academies. So how did he choose?

If Liam Moseley’s mum hadn’t accidentally taken him to the wrong training park as a kid he might not have even been playing rugby.

And if the 23-year-old Southern District gun hadn’t gone through four major surgeries in five years, his resolve to make a mark in the sport might not be quite as intense as it is.

Moseley, so talented as a student at St Joseph’s College Nudgee he was in the Brisbane Lions Academy for AFL, the Broncos Under 20s in rugby league and the Reds Academy for union, is intent on making a big impression for Southern Districts this Shute Shield season as he celebrates being injury free for the second consecutive year.

Moseley, who was eventually too big for AFL and most passionate about union, missed out in playing for the Australian Schoolboys due to an ACL injury in 2015.

“My first game back I did my shoulder, had surgery and was out for eight months. I’ve had three reconstructions in 2013, 2016 and 2018.

“But I’ve been injury free for two years now.”

In rugby I’m loud and larrikin, bring energy and laughter. I’m bossy because of my position as well

Hoping Shute Shield will be a launch pad to future success, Moseley said the game, coach Todd Louden and the Southern Districts club brings out the best in him.

“I am a different person at rugby,” he said.

“I am quite shy away from it. I get quite nervous and bad anxiety in environments I’m not comfortable with.

“In rugby I’m loud and larrikin, bring energy and laughter. I’m bossy because of my position as well.

“In the past I have heard some mental healthy issues I have had to work through, moving around a lot was pretty hard, being away from home and friends and family made it a bit tough.

“Sport has been so good for me. It’s my distraction.”

Moseley, who was also with the Brumbies under 20s program, is intent on bulking up his 85 kilo frame to play the game he loves.

“I’m still four or five kilos off my wanted playing weight,” he said.

“I eat heaps, the only way I can do it is to eat. Things like sweet potato, chicken, tuna, veggies, bread rolls, lot of carbs and protein.”

Southern Districts hosts one of the most anticipate games this weekend when they host league leaders Randwick.
