A former prison guard and three young accomplices will face justice for a clumsy plot to murder her husband by attempting to blow up his car while he was passed out before he woke to the sound of a hissing gas bottle.

Sharon Yarnton, 50, was found guilty of attempted murder after a date night at a suburban Sydney RSL club with her then-husband Dean Yarnton.

The Menai woman’s co-accused Monique Hayes, 28, her husband Fady Houda, 27, and their friend Anthony Mouhtaris, 25, were also found guilty of attempting to cause an explosion with intent to murder over their roles in the bizarre plot.

An additional charge of attempting to cause an explosion to cause grievous bodily harm was dismissed for all four.

Yarnton, Hayes, Houda and Mouhtaris are listed for sentence in the NSW District Court on February 28, more than five years since that fateful night in January 2015.

The court has heard Mr Yarnton suspected he was drugged before he passed out in his car on the way home from a night out at Merrylands RSL with his then-wife Sharon on January 31, 2015.

Mr Yarnton told the court the beer tasted strange and CCTV footage shows Sharon Yarnton taking the beer back to the bar and pouring it into a different glass before returning to him.

He then fell asleep on the drive home before he woke up alone in the car on the side of the road in Picnic Point in Sydney’s southwest to the sound of a hissing LPG gas bottle and his feet soaked in diesel petrol.

Yarnton told her ex-husband she was going to the toilet in nearby bushland before he emerged from the car to see another vehicle driving away from the scene.

All four were found guilty last July after two previous attempted trials fell down in 2017 and 2018.

Sentencing proceedings will continue before Judge Jane Culver at Downing Centre District Court this month.

However, an argument continues over key facts of the case as Sharon Yarnton’s solicitor says there is not enough evidence to prove the beer was drugged before Mr Yarnton passed out.
