Swimmers have been evacuated from the water after a 3m shark reportedly became trapped in netted baths at a beach in Sydney’s south.

St George police officers responded at 6.24pm after local children swimming in the netted area at Brighton Le Sands reported seeing a large shark in the water.

All swimmers have left the water and officers believe the shark may be stuck in the net.

Local residents have posted images online showing a large fin emerging from the water near the baths.

Witnesses told police they could “see the shark from the cafe across the road” due to its size.

Police have so far been unable to make contact with the Department of Primary Industries about the report.

Local resident Pamela Klink wrote on Facebook she first heard reports of the shark at 1pm. “A lady spotted it (and) made everyone get out of the water,” Ms Klink wrote.

“No one believed her. We took no risk and left.”

Another local resident Antonia Accoto-Basile said the beach needed lifeguards.

“Most people believe incorrectly that just because Brighton-Le-Sands is calm water it is safe,” Ms Accoto-Basile said.

“Sharks can come over and through the nets. The shark was probably minding his own business but can you imagine what could have happened.”

Fellow resident Jessica Baxter quipped: “Maybe it was sick of all the jetskis”.

More to come.
