Running in large groups is now banned on a Sydney pedestrian bridge due to residents’ fears the footbridge is being put at risk of collapse by fitness freaks.

Sutherland Shire Council has installed signs asking residents not to run in large groups across the Prince Edward Park footbridge in Woronora due to feedback from residents concerned they are damaging the bridge’s structure.

The new sign reads “Running groups will cause excessive vibration which could may damage the structure”.

“The council arranged for an assessment by a structural engineer, who confirmed that the footbridge is structurally sound,” a council spokeswoman said.

“However, as an added precaution for the structure we will be installing advisory signage asking the community to not run in large groups across the bridge and for safety reasons to not jump from the bridge.”

Bewildered residents responded with amusement to the new signs, with Sharon Quandt saying the council needed to be more specific.

“I walk fast, could be considered a partial jog … now I’m second guessing,” Ms Quandt wrote on Facebook.

The council spokeswoman said the council aimed for the community to “safely enjoy active lives connected to nature”.
