A POLICE officer involved in a high speed collision in Sydney’s south earlier this month that left a woman critically injured has been charged.
The 40-year-old senior constable from Highway Patrol was allegedly pursuing a driver caught using their mobile phone on the Kingsway near Cronulla on September 5 when he collided with a sedan driven by Gai Vieira, wife of racehorse owner Bert Vieira.
Mrs Vieira, 58, remains in hospital in a coma, but her three-year-old grandson who was in the back of the car was miraculously uninjured.
The officer was charged with dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm and issued a future court attendance notice.
He will appear at Downing Centre Local Court on November 12 and his duty status is currently under review.
Mrs Vieira was turning right out of Connels Rd onto the Kingsway towards Cronulla when her car was struck.
Mr Vieira, who owns racehorse Trapeze Artist, told media earlier this month his wife of 43 years was extremely unwell.
“She has three busted ribs, a punctured lung, a damaged knee, ankle, elbows and shoulder and brain trauma,” Mr Vieira said.
