A young woman who crashed into a motorcyclist and his passenger in Sydney’s south then fled the scene will now face justice over the life-changing incident.
Police say Molly Cahill, 23, texted her friend wondering if a motorcycle rider was hurt after she hit him with her car on Forest Rd in Penshurst at 1.20am on April 8 last year.
The 36-year-old man and his 28-year-old partner were thrown from the bike and left with significant leg injuries before Cahill drove away from the appalling scene.
Cahill will be sentenced at Downing Centre Local Court on May 6 for dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm, failing to stop and assist after a crash causing grievous bodily harm and causing bodily harm by misconduct while in charge of a motor vehicle.
Additional charges of dangerous driving, negligent driving, not keeping left of the dividing line and reckless or furious driving were withdrawn and dismissed.
When Cahill was first arrested in 2019 Magistrate Les Mabbutt said she had discussed her involvement in the crash with her friends within minutes of it occurring.
“Police say she made calls and messages to friends, and other people, about what took place and that she knew someone was possibly injured, and that ‘I was on the wrong side of the road’,” Mr Mabbutt said.
“If she is convicted I consider it’s a strong case and she is likely to serve imprisonment, though exactly what kind is a matter to be determined.”
Cahill was on a bond at the time for separate offences including a drink driving matter at Wollongong Local Court for which she has since been sentenced.
