Md Sariful Islam convicted after assaulting wife in Bexley

A Bangladeshi woman in an arranged marriage had been in Australia for just two weeks when her husband hit her with a mobile phone and stood on her chest until her sternum cracked.

Md Sariful Islam, 31, flew into a rage on December 8 last year when he found out his wife had texted his mother while he was playing football-based video game FIFA in the living room.

They had just returned home from dinner together at McDonald’s Lakemba.

“The accused ripped the covers off the victim, who was laying in bed,” agreed police facts stated.

“The accused grabbed the victim around the neck in an aggressive manner and squeezed … then stepped up onto the bed and with both feet and without supporting his weight, stepped on the chest of the victim for about one minute.”

Md Sariful Islam has been convicted of domestic assault.

Islam pleaded guilty to two counts of common assault with a separate incident occurring just 10 days after his wife moved into his Bexley North sharehouse when her spousal visa was granted.

Magistrate Michael Connell convicted Islam at Sutherland Local Court and sentenced him to a two-year supervised community corrections order and 120 hours of community service.

Mr Connell said Islam’s conduct was “totally unacceptable”.

“This is a serious offence of domestic violence,” Mr Connell said.

“It is a sad fact of life that domestic violence is all too prevalent in our community.”

Police found Islam’s wife wailing in agony on the floor of their bedroom when she called triple-0 after he refused to do so himself due to the cost of an ambulance.

“During the extreme discomfort the victim has felt and heard a crack come from her chest and then a sharp and immediate pain,” the facts stated.

“This caused the victim to have breathing difficulties.”

While she was wailing in pain Islam then bashed his wife eight times to the left side of her head until she lost hearing.

Police then learned Islam had struck her in the face with his mobile phone on December 1, causing swelling, only when she gave evidence after the second assault on December 8.

She had only been in the country for 10 days, though they had married in September 2016.

“She is alone and due to the nature of her obligations, police believe that if left in the company of her husband and with the dishonour that has placed upon him and his family, that the likelihood of future assaults or worse is quite high,” the facts stated.

“Police contacted St George Hospital and were advised that the victim had sustained a fractured sternum and a ruptured membrane in her left ear.”

Court documents say Islam works at a church charity.
