A man allegedly threatened several members of the public with a shovel and punched random pedestrians in Sydney’s south before he was apprehended by an off-duty police officer.

Kobi Luke Hipkins, 25, has been charged with using an offensive weapon intending to commit an offence and entering enclosed lands after the bizarre alleged incident in Riverwood on Thursday.

Police allege Hipkins exited a Holden Rodeo on Belmore Rd and walked around to the driver’s side before punching the driver several times.

Hipkins then allegedly punched several pedestrians on the footpath as he ran down Belmore Rd before he returned to the Holden, removed a shovel from the tray and allegedly swung it towards several people while verbally abusing them.

A male off-duty police officer nearby approached and introduced himself before Hipkins allegedly fled on foot through the yards of multiple houses as the off-duty constable pursued him.

Hipkins was apprehended by St George police officers in an Eldon St backyard and took him to Kogarah police station, where he was charged.

He was refused bail to face Parramatta Local Court today.
