A unlicensed driver who crashed into a Range Rover so hard it flipped and then carjacked two men who came to his aid could face more than a year behind bars for his crimes.
Livigisitone Meafua, 22, smashed into a young woman’s Range Rover in the M5 tunnel near Marsh St in Arncliffe at 12.30am on September 14 last year.
When two men in a Honda Accord Euro came to the pair’s aid, Meafua carjacked their vehicle while threatening the driver with a knife.
Meafua was subsequently arrested in St Marys two days later and charged with an array of offences over the shocking incident.
At Downing Centre District Court on Monday, Meafua pleaded guilty to carjacking, driving furiously and causing bodily harm, driving without a licence, destroying property, failing to stop and assist after a crash causing injury and larceny.
The court heard Meafua has, in fact, never held a licence before.
Judge Warwick Hunt indicated Meafua would be sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment but adjourned his decision to consider how Meafua should serve his term.
Campbelltown Community Corrections will provide a sentencing assessment report on Meafua and whether he could serve his prison term in home detention instead of behind bars.
Meafua, who had previously attended a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program, was supported by several family members and friends in court.
